Zone 5 Gardening

An essential thing to do in gardening is keeping and maintaining regular notes about your garden. This helps you in knowing what exactly you have achieved and what is pending. Here is a list of maintenance activities that you can do to maintain your garden in USDA zone 5.

February (1st week to 3rd week):

Put a cold frame together and position it in such a place where warm climate plants will be grown. This will give more time for all the seedlings to mature in the cold frame before they are removed.

Weeds are nothing but unwanted and invasive plants that are found in gardens and lawns. They tend to suck up all the nutrients from the soil and render the soil useless for the growth of other plants. They generally look ugly and multiply quickly. They spring up everywhere including plant beds and drive ways. They can be eliminated in many ways like spraying herbicides and pulling them out manually. However, the battle between you and the weeds is a continuous and never ending one.

The zones in the U.S. are classified on the basis of their temperatures in winter. The maps of these zones presume that all the other factors that are needed for the growth and development of plants like number of days without frosts, soil quality, water supply, sunlight, etc are perfectly ideal. The coldest of winter temperatures in zone 5 may reach anywhere between -20 to -10 F. There are very few plants that can survive in these temperatures.
